Training focuses on access, dispensing, adherence, clinical counseling and management of a range of therapies in specialty pharmacy and chronic diseases. The program exposes residents to the fundamentals of pharmacy administration, research, safety, quality improvement and accreditation. Residents are also exposed to specialty pharmacy chronic diseases and medication therapy management in block rotations.

The purpose of the PGY2 Residency Program in Specialty Pharmacy Administration and Leadership at Vivo Health Pharmacy is to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. This program provides residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. This accredited program will allow the resident to gain experience in the areas of ambulatory pharmacy leadership, clinical management, specialty pharmacy accreditation, operations, medication safety, pharmacy informatics, finance, contracting, marketing, and business development. Residents who successfully complete this program are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification.

The PANTHERx Rare Pharmacy Fellowship Program offers a unique and distinctive opportunity to interface with patients, healthcare providers, health plans and manufacturers to effectively optimize patient outcomes. Completion of this program will result in a highly knowledgeable pharmacist competent in both clinical and business aspects of rare pharmacy management.

The program is based at a unique Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy situated within the UCSF medical campus. Through curriculum designed utilizing variety of specialty, retail and management location, the resident receives training in management of patients with health conditions such as HIV, Hepatitis C, organ transplants, oncology and other diseases states such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia and cardiovascular disease. This program ensures that resident attains a well-rounded experience and graduates as a leader in community pharmacy.

Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy is a leader in specialty pharmacy with four central-dispensing locations and around 250 local specialty sites in communities across the United States. Walgreens Central Specialty, located in Pittsburgh, is licensed in all 50 states and some U.S. territories. At the same location, Walgreens has launched a state-of-the-art Gene and Cell pharmacy and HUB services center to meet the rapidly changing and unique needs of specialty patients. The goal of the Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy and University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Practice Residency is to provide pharmacy residents with the opportunities to develop the fundamental skills necessary to excel in the specialty pharmacy environment.

Residency Special Features: PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy residents will practice at Cleveland Clinic Specialty Pharmacy on the administrative campus of Cleveland Clinic within the care coordination center, as well as select regional and main campus Cleveland Clinic ambulatory care clinics. Required rotations are: orientation, care coordination center 1/2/3 (disease states including: autoimmune/inflammatory, cardiology, hematology, hepatology/HIV, neurology, oncology, osteoporosis), and ambulatory care clinics 1/2/3, where the resident will have an opportunity to choose from 3 different clinics (neurology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, Hepatitis C, HIV/PrEP, and regional oncology). Other required rotations that are longitudinal spanning most of the year include: patient-centered dispensing, practice management, projects, and teaching and education. The residents will complete a teaching certificate program through Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). Pharmacist preceptors are available for all rotations listed.

Geisinger’s Specialty Pharmacy Residency is designed to empower pharmacists for advanced practice in the dynamic field of specialty pharmacy. As a resident, you’ll rotate through a variety of ambulatory care specialty clinics, collaborating with interprofessional teams under a practice agreement to manage complex conditions and optimize the use of high-cost medications. You’ll also gain hands-on experience in Geisinger Specialty Pharmacy, where you’ll be involved in dispensing, patient education, and adherence monitoring. The Atrium Health Specialty Pharmacy Service (AH SPS) is a health-system-integrated outpatient medication service providing care coordination and clinical services for patients treated with high-touch, high-dollar, self-administered specialty medications. AH SPS has 19 clinical service lines within the disciplines of oncology, hematology, inflammatory disease, hepatology, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular disease, cardiology, HIV, pulmonology, cystic fibrosis, bleeding disorders and others serving over 10,000 patients annually across North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. AH SPS is dual accredited by URAC and ACHC with oncology distinction.
Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) is a 951-bed academic teaching hospital with residency programs in pharmacy as well as medical and dental specialties. Along with Carolinas College of Health Sciences, it provides an educational environment for more than 1,000 residents, medical students, pharmacy students, physician extenders, nursing students and other allied health professionals annually.

The Navitus Managed Care Residency Program, headquartered in Madison, WI, offers pharmacists robust training and experience in managed care pharmacy. This program focuses on developing clinical, analytical, and leadership skills through diverse rotations and projects, including formulary management, medication therapy management (MTM), and quality improvement initiatives. Residents are mentored by seasoned professionals and collaborate with a wide range of healthcare stakeholders, gaining a well-rounded perspective on the managed care environment. The program’s goal is to develop proficient pharmacists who lead in advancing healthcare solutions, enhancing patient outcomes, and promoting efficient, value-driven pharmacy practices.

Lumicera Health Services is a full-service specialty pharmacy dedicated to improving patient care and well-being through educational, clinical, financial and service excellence. The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program allows residents to expand clinical patient care and counseling skills in a wide-range of complex disease states, conduct and present research at a National conference, develop leadership skills, obtain a teaching certificate through the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy, precept pharmacy students, create and enhance clinical patient management programs, and explore pharmacy roles in Managed Care through its diverse learning experiences.

This residency program will prepare community-based practitioners capable of developing, providing, and advancing patient care services in any practice setting with a specific focus on patients with complex specialty disease states. Graduates from the residency program will be highly sought community-based pharmacists that will be desired for their advanced skill-set in managing patients with complex disease states holistically and their experience in developing patient centered services in the specialty environment. Graduates would have the abilities and experiences necessary to secure positions with direct clinically focused patient care, ambulatory care practice settings, management opportunities, and academia.

UK launched a dual PGY1/PGY2 residency in Specialty Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (SPAL) in July 2018. This program encompasses a two‐year experience that combines the well-rounded clinical experience of UK’s PGY1 Community-Based Specialty Pharmacy Residency with the rotational and longitudinal management and leadership experiences during the PGY2 SPAL residency year. Although this program is marketed as a combined PGY1/2 program it is actually two separate programs where the accepted candidate is committed to completing both their PGY1 Community-Based Specialty Pharmacy Residency followed by their PGY2 in SPAL at UK. Residents in this program also pursue a Master of Science degree from the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Graduates of the program will be experts in the clinical, operational, and business aspects of a health system specialty pharmacy.

The Specialty Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (SPAL) Residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is a 24-month program offers a combined PGY1 pharmacy and PGY2 SPAL with Master of Science (MS) in Health-System Pharmacy Administration from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy.

The Baylor Scott & White PGY2 Specialty Pharmacy Residency provides advanced training in the health system specialty pharmacy setting to provide pharmacists with the clinical and administrative skills necessary to provide outcomes-driven, high quality patient care while achieving and maintaining pharmacy accreditation standards and advancing the profession. Specialty pharmacy focuses on providing supportive services to patients who are on high-risk prescription medications used to treat complex medical conditions. The University of Kentucky launched a PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency, specializing in Specialty Pharmacy, in June 2024. Accredited by both URAC and ACHC, our specialty pharmacy sets a high standard in patient care with over 200 dedicated employees. The program fosters collaboration across more than 40 clinics in over 30 therapeutic categories. VytlOne’s PGY2 SPAL residency builds upon PGY1 residency graduates’ competence in the delivery of patient-centered care and in pharmacy operational services to prepare residents who can assume high level managerial, supervisory, and leadership responsibilities. Areas of competence emphasized during the program include safe and effective medication use systems, quality assurance and improvement, the management of human resources, the management of financial resources, use of technology, and advanced leadership. The University of Chicago Medicine PGY-1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program prepares pharmacists to become confident, well-rounded leaders in outpatient and specialty pharmacy practice. Residents gain broad experience in patient-centered care, clinical specialty pharmacy, ambulatory care, teaching, research, and pharmacy management within an ASHP Center of Excellence and URAC-accredited practice. The program emphasizes individualized learning plans tailored to residents’ goals, supported by dedicated mentorship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a longitudinal leadership development experience. The UH Specialty Pharmacy PGY1 Residency offers a unique ambulatory care setting. Residents will be integrated among the various disease specialties including: oncology, rheumatology, gastroenterology, neurology- multiple sclerosis, neurology- neuromuscular/memory care, cystic fibrosis, dermatology, fertility, hepatology, asthma immunology, and cardiology as well as within the main specialty pharmacy and ambulatory infusion center working with insurances, patient foundations, and patient grants. As such, the PGY1 University Hospitals – Specialty Pharmacy residency program prepares residents to be change agents and skilled patient care providers in community pharmacy settings, particularly those that include elements of specialty pharmacy care (i.e. specialty medications, telepharmacy).

The Fairview Health Services and M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center Ambulatory Pharmacy Practice Residency is located throughout Fairview Health Services practice sites. The PGY-2 Administrative Specialty Pharmacy Residency at Mount Sinai builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY-1 experience to prepare pharmacists for leadership and management in specialty pharmacy practice.

The PGY1 / PGY2 Specialty Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (SPAL) with masters residency program with CPS Solutions, LLC is a combination program consisting of a Master’s degree and residency in Specialty Pharmacy Administration and Leadership created to focus on developing leadership and management skills through practical specialty pharmacy experiences. CPS creates an environment of professional growth and a foundation of development of leadership skills that will prepare the resident to assume leadership in a health-system specialty pharmacy. CPS has collaborated with The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy for the resident to earn their Masters in Health-System Pharmacy Administration throughout a 24-month program.

The PGY-1 Community-Based Residency focused in Specialty Pharmacy at WVU Hospital’s Specialty Pharmacy will provide the resident with an opportunity to accelerate their professional entry-level competence in a patient-centered environment focusing on both the clinical and operational components of community pharmacy. The resident will build upon their Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education to develop problem-solving strategies and growth of their clinical judgment throughout the year.

The postgraduate year two (PGY2) specialty pharmacy administration and leadership residency is a new addition to the Community Health Network Residency Program catalog. This residency joins our PGY1 and multiple PGY2 programs on site at Community Health Network. The goal of this residency is to help the resident develop through flexible opportunities in leadership and new service development within specialty pharmacy and clinical practice experience in a variety of specialty areas. Located on the Community Hospital North campus, Community Health Network Specialty Pharmacy (CHNSP) provides comprehensive, high-touch care for patients requiring specialty medication therapy and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to provide exceptional care.
