The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at University Hospitals Specialty Pharmacy is designed for PharmD graduates interested in specialty pharmacy, ambulatory care, and direct patient care in a rapidly growing and evolving field. Residents gain hands-on experience managing high-cost, complex therapies across multiple specialty disease states, working closely with providers and patients in both clinical and outpatient settings. Residents are integrated among various disease specialties including: oncology, rheumatology, gastroenterology, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular/memory care, cystic fibrosis, dermatology, fertility, hepatology, asthma immunology, and cardiology as well as within the main specialty pharmacy and ambulatory infusion centers. This ASHP-accredited program emphasizes patient-centered care, access coordination, and preparation for advanced practice or PGY2 training.

The residency program is based at a premier specialty pharmacy location offers a variety of patient care services to support patients who are managing chronic life-threatening or rare conditions. The clinical pharmacists at this site work closely with health care professionals, patient care advocates, insurance verification specialists, and patients to meet the needs of medication therapy. The residency is offered in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy to provide the resident with opportunities to serve as a graduate mentor with student organizations, participate in advocacy events, administer vaccinations, and develop the academic skills necessary to serve as an educator and preceptor.

The Community Pharmacy Residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center offers a comprehensive 12-month, full-time curriculum designed to cultivate well-rounded clinical pharmacists. Residents gain invaluable patient care experience across a diverse array of settings, including community health centers, primary care clinics, various specialty pharmacy areas and medication management and transplant clinics. A wide selection of electives further customizes the learning journey, providing the essential elements needed to mold a highly skilled practitioner.

PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program Purpose: To build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy education and outcomes to develop community-based pharmacist practitioners with diverse patient care, leadership, and education skills who are eligible to pursue advanced training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies and professional certifications. This residency program is a training opportunity for pharmacists to enhance their skill set in the community pharmacy setting with a focus on complex specialty disease states. Graduates will possess the necessary skills needed to secure positions in the following areas specialty pharmacy, ambulatory care practice settings, management opportunities, and academia. The residency program is conducted across three Walgreens Specialty Pharmacies and two ambulatory care clinics in Indianapolis, IN. These locations are tailored to provide the training necessary for graduates to emerge with a unique skill set in a multitude of settings. At these sites, the resident will work closely with providers and patients to provide affordable specialty drug therapies. Through this program, the resident gains experience in the delivery of clinical services, conducting research, precepting students, and participating in a teaching certification.

The PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Residency Program through Walgreens is located in Louisville, KY and is a unique opportunity for postgraduate training. Residents enhance their skill sets in various environments, including but not limited to specialty pharmacy, community pharmacy, ambulatory care, and teaching settings. Participants will be actively involved in the community working with the Family Health Centers (FQHC) and other organizations. Residents will manage unique disease states within the specialty site. The UIC PGY2 Specialty Pharmacy Administration and Leadership residency offers administrative pharmacy training in a fantastic ambulatory specialty setting. No prior specialty experience is required, and graduates of this program will be well equipped for managing staff and learners, leading projects, directing teams and strategic planning, with rich patient care experiences. Rotations include experiences in 340B, contracting & finance, operations, research, teaching and more. The selected fellow will experience a “Patient Centered Approach” at Value Specialty Pharmacy as well as an in-depth wholesaler experience in partnership with Value Drug Company. The program is designed to allow the fellow to increase their knowledge and understanding of both specialty pharmacy and pharmacy wholesale business.

The ambulatory-focused PGY1 Pharmacy Residency highlights the expanding opportunities for ambulatory care in the profession of pharmacy, combining clinical skills in a setting where patient care
and interaction are the gold standard of practice. Residents will continue to develop their interprofessional skills through continued collaboration with the healthcare team. Residents will become experienced in interacting with patients and helping them learn the skills to manage their own health.

This 24-month program offers a comprehensive two-year experience that integrates the diverse clinical training from the PGY1 ambulatory residency with the rotational, longitudinal management and leadership experiences provided during the PGY2 SPAL residency year.

The Lumicera PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program offers diverse learning experiences across specialty pharmacy clinical services, patient management programs, clinical operations, quality initiatives, leadership development, and research. Disease state rotations provide opportunities to optimize care for patients with complex conditions in immunology, neurology, oncology, and endocrinology. Through direct patient care, interdisciplinary collaboration, and innovative practice experiences, residents develop the clinical expertise and leadership skills needed to launch a successful career in specialty pharmacy.

The UChicago Medicine PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program prepares residents to become confident, well-rounded pharmacists with advanced skills in specialty pharmacy, ambulatory care, outpatient pharmacy practice, leadership, research, and education. Residents gain hands-on experience within UChicago Medicine’s specialty pharmacy services, including required specialty pharmacy experiences and opportunities to pursue additional specialty-focused electives based on individual career goals. Training includes direct patient care, medication access and management, pharmacy operations and accreditation, interdisciplinary collaboration, practice advancement, and longitudinal leadership development. The program is highly individualized, allowing residents to tailor experiences toward their professional interests and prepare for careers in clinical specialty pharmacy, ambulatory care, outpatient pharmacy leadership, academia, and other advanced practice roles.

The Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy and Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) PGY-1 Community-Based Residency program focuses on advancing residents’ abilities to manage patients with complex specialty conditions and develop innovative patient care services. Through direct patient care, interdisciplinary collaboration, research, teaching, and practice management experiences, residents develop the expertise needed for careers in specialty pharmacy, ambulatory care, academia, or other advanced clinical practice settings.

The residency program is based out of three community-based specialty pharmacy locations that offer a variety of innovative clinical pharmacy services for the patients who are prescribed complex therapies. The pharmacists at these sites work closely with medical staff to provide optimal drug therapy for patients. The residency program is offered in partnership with the University of Illinois at Chicago Retzky College of Pharmacy where residents receive additional learning experiences in ambulatory care and teaching. Residency graduate can provide patient care for the members of their community, achieve their professional goals and become a leader within the profession.

The CHRISTUS Specialty Pharmacy PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program is designed to develop residents’ knowledge of specialty pharmacy operations, enhance their ability to provide clinical services across specialty disease states, strengthen leadership and administrative skills, and foster engagement in scholarly activities. Residents train within a health-system specialty pharmacy and affiliated clinic settings, where specialty pharmacists serve as integrated members of interdisciplinary patient care teams.

Our program consists of several block learning experiences including oncology, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, hepatology, neurology and practice management while also offering longitudinal learning in MTM, transitions of care, pharmacy dispensing and a community clinic medical home. Elective rotations include selections from: cystic fibrosis, rare disease, hematology, endocrine and multiple sclerosis. Additionally, the program weaves in clinical outcomes research, quality improvement training and teaching through presentations and student precepting over the course of the year with dedicated office and preparation time weekly.

This postgraduate training opportunity for pharmacists enhances their skill set in the community and specialty pharmacy setting. The primary residency practice site is a community-based specialty pharmacy in Nashville, TN. The pharmacy teams service patients with many disease states including oncology, transplant, chronic inflammatory diseases, HIV and HCV. The pharmacists at these sites work closely with providers, patients, and the community to provide optimal drug therapy for patients. In addition, residents gain insights on management issues that can affect the implementation of patient care services in the community and specialty pharmacy setting.

The purpose of the PGY2 Residency Program in Specialty Pharmacy Administration and Leadership at VIVOHealth Pharmacy is to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. This program provides residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. This accredited program will allow the resident to gain experience in the areas of ambulatory pharmacy leadership, clinical management, specialty pharmacy accreditation, operations, medication safety, pharmacy informatics, finance, contracting, marketing, and business development. Residents who successfully complete this program are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification.

The University of Kentucky PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program offers training opportunities at three practice sites: St. Matthews Community and Specialty Pharmacy in Louisville, KY; Kroger Pharmacy in Lexington, KY; and PrimaryPlus in Morehead, KY. The St. Matthews site provides a strong community and specialty pharmacy experience with opportunities to develop advanced patient care services, participate in pharmacy operations and practice advancement, and work closely with patients and other healthcare professionals. Across all three sites, residents gain experience providing direct patient care services, including immunizations, health and wellness services, medication therapy management, and other pharmacist-led clinical services.
